In the past, most companies opted for a DEDICATED Exchanger server in their place of business. This meant buying a server, a backup power system, the software required, as well as paying an IT ‘geek’ to come in and set it all up, and come back every time the sever got a virus, ran out of space, or a new employee joined or left the organization. Even the smallest dedicated Exchange server setup often cost $10,000 or more per year to set up, and then several thousand a year to maintain. We have seen examples of small businesses with 5 or so staff who’s costs for running Exchange have literally ended up in the hundreds of dollars per month per employee – Just for email! And perhaps have not even had very good spam and virus protection despite the costs.
